TO REACTIVATE THE ECONOMY, THE GOVERNMENT MUST WORK AS THE GREAT INDUCTOR OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRAZIL

Fernando Alcoforado*

In 90 days of government, it is possible to identify the incompetence and inertia of the Bolsonaro administration to solve Brazil’s economic problems and its insensitivity to face the social problems generated by unemployment in Brazil. This nefarious character of the present government is identifiable, not only in the unpreparedness of Jair Bolsonaro to exercise the presidency of the Republic, but also in the action of his government as a whole that does not commit himself in the attempt to present solution to the main problem of the Country that is the stagnation of the economy with its consequences related to the closing of industries and commercial and service activities and, above all, of the mass unemployment of the order of 28 million underutilized workers inherited from the incompetent Dilma Rousseff government.

Instead of persevering in solving economic problems and mass unemployment, the Bolsonaro government insists on maintaining the neoliberal economic model, which is mainly responsible for the crisis that broke out in the world in 2008 and in Brazil in 2014, in addition to giving priority to the project of reform of the Social Security of Paulo Guedes, his Minister of Economy, and the anticrime package of his Minister of Justice, Sergio Moro, projects that will not contribute to the reactivation of the Brazilian economy. Bolsonaro and his ministers demonstrate that they are not effective managers since they do not spend their time working on what really matters to Brazil at the time that is the reactivation of the economy and the fight against unemployment, do not drive their efforts to the desired results by the nation that it is the resumption of national development, they do not start with what needs to be done (reactivation of the economy and fight against unemployment) and do not focus on the few large areas where superior performance will produce excellent results for the country.

Before reactivating the Brazilian economy, the Bolsonaro government should abandon the neoliberal economic model implemented in 1990, from which the federal government abdicated national economic planning. The neoliberal model, responsible for Brazil’s economic debacle, should be replaced by the national development model with active participation of the State in economic planning as occurred in the period 1930/1980 when Brazil reached its greatest economic and social development. The data presented in the following paragraphs demonstrate the failure of pre-1930 economic liberalism, the success of the national development model from 1930 to 1980, and the failure of neoliberalism from 1990 to the present time in Brazil.
